How to price herringbone tiling

Quick answer

Herringbone takes longer and wastes more tile than a straight lay. One UK trade pricing guide puts mosaic, patterned and herringbone labour at £60–£100 per m², against £30–£45 for standard ceramic (trade2base, June 2026).

Allow 20–25% wastage, against 10% for a straight lay, and charge separately for borders and the setting out.

Herringbone looks great and is in demand, but it's slow. Every row needs cutting at both edges, the setting out has to be exact from the start, and a small error grows across the room. Price it as the specialist job it is.

We found few published figures for herringbone tile labour specifically. The trade2base rate covers mosaic and patterned work as a group, so treat it as a guide. Checkatrade notes that herringbone, diagonal and offset patterns need more cuts per m², which adds labour time and material waste.

What makes herringbone slower

  • Setting out: finding the centre line, dry-laying and working out how the pattern meets doorways and the main view of the room.
  • Edge cuts: every row ends in angled cuts at both walls.
  • Accuracy: joints have to stay true across the whole room, so you need to check them more often.
  • Borders: a border or frame around the pattern is extra work.
  • Small tiles: many herringbone tiles are narrow, so there are more tiles and more grout lines per m².

Worked example

A 6 m² hallway in 75 × 300 mm herringbone tiles:

The same hallway laid straight at £30–£45 per m² would be £180–£270. Showing customers the difference in a quote, with the reason for it, makes the higher price easier to accept.

Figures come from the published UK sources listed under Sources. Herringbone labour varies a lot with tile size, room shape and region, so check the price against your own day rate using the labour cost calculator.
