Quoting a bathroom
A step-by-step guide with a worked example for a 2.5 × 2 m bathroom.
Read the guide →Planning estimates only. Adhesive figures are typical manufacturer consumption rates (e.g. Mapei Adesilex P9); grout uses the standard formula (L+W)/(L×W) × joint width × tile thickness × 1.6, plus 10%. Always check the data sheet for the product you are using.
Add up the width of every wall you're tiling and multiply by the tiled height. Use the full height for a floor-to-ceiling bathroom, or measure to the top of the splashback or the half-height line. Take off doors and windows: a standard internal door is about 0.8 m wide and 2 m high, so roughly 1.6 m². Add back window reveals and boxing, which are easy to forget and full of cuts. Mapei's data sheet gives about 2.5–3 kg/m² of adhesive for standard wall tiles, and about 2 kg/m² for mosaics.
