Ask most tilers why they got into the trade and you probably won't hear:
"I really wanted to spend my evenings writing quotes."
We became tilers to tile.
But once you're running your own tiling business, actually laying tiles is only part of the job.
There are enquiries to answer, site visits to arrange, measurements to remember, quotes to write, customers to chase, jobs to organise, materials to calculate, invoices to send and payments to keep track of.
And somehow, most of that gets done after you've already finished a full day on the tools.
The Second Shift
You finish the job, load the tools back into the van and head home.
Then you remember the customer you promised a quote.
You've got their measurements somewhere.
Maybe they're written in a notebook. Maybe they're in your phone. Maybe you took a photo of a piece of plasterboard you wrote them on.
Then there's another customer waiting for a reply on WhatsApp and someone else asking when you can fit their bathroom in.
Welcome to the second shift. The unpaid admin shift.
For a one-man tiling business, you're not just the tiler. You're also the estimator, salesperson, administrator, scheduler, accounts department and customer service team.
The Problem Isn't That Tilers Can't Do Admin
Most tilers already have a system.
The problem is that the "system" has often developed bit by bit over the years.
- Quotes might be created in Word or Excel.
- Customer messages are in WhatsApp.
- Appointments are in a calendar.
- Measurements are in Notes.
- Invoices are somewhere else.
- Job photos are on your phone.
None of those things are necessarily bad on their own.
The problem comes when you have to remember where everything is.
That might be manageable when you've got one or two jobs on the go.
When you're quoting several jobs while completing another one and arranging the next, it gets much harder.
A Quote Isn't Just a Price
Customers often see the final number. You know what went into producing it.
You've travelled to the property, spoken to the customer, measured the area, checked the substrate, worked out preparation, calculated materials, considered trims and extras, estimated how long the job will take and finally put everything into a quote.
And you haven't earned anything yet.
That's why making the quoting process faster matters.
Saving ten minutes doesn't sound particularly exciting.
Save ten minutes on every quote over an entire year and suddenly it does.
Your Evenings Are Part of the Cost
Tradespeople are usually very good at calculating the cost of materials and the number of days required for a job.
We aren't always as good at putting a value on our own admin time.
An hour spent writing quotes at 8pm is still an hour of your time.
So is chasing an enquiry. So is finding an old customer's details. So is recreating information you've already written down somewhere else.
You might not put those hours on an invoice, but your business is still paying for them.
There Has to Be a Better Way
That thought was one of the reasons I started developing TileIQ.
I spent years working in IT before changing careers and becoming a tiler. After around 15 years in the trade, I'd experienced both sides.
IT taught me what software can do. Tiling taught me what tilers actually need.
And I kept coming back to the same question:
Why are we making the admin side of running a tiling business harder than it needs to be?
TileIQ grew from that idea.
Not software designed for every possible trade and then adapted for tilers. A job-management system built around the way tilers actually work.
Less Admin. More Tiling.
Technology isn't going to mix your adhesive.
It isn't going to fix a badly prepared floor.
And unfortunately, it isn't going to deal with the customer who says: "While you're here, could you just tile this little bit as well?"
What it can do is make the business behind the tiling easier to manage.
Keep customer and job information together. Make quoting quicker. Keep track of what's happening next. Turn completed work into invoices without starting everything again. And reduce the amount of business information living inside your head.
Because running a tiling business will always involve admin.
It just shouldn't take over your evenings.
You do the tiling. Let TileIQ help with the rest.
